DIET DRUG PHENTERMINE
Phentermine is being
considered as one of the most effective drug for weight loss for
our times. Its easy to use and has few side effects.
The diet-drug combination of
fenfluramine and phentermine, commonly known as phentermine, is
taken by millions of Americans (men and women) and has been
available since the late 1980s.
Physicians have written more than
18 million prescriptions for phentermine, which increases the
level of the brain chemical serotonin, thereby curbing the
appetite and giving patients the sensation of being full.
Doctors say phentermine isn't
meant for people who want to lose a few pounds for cosmetic
reasons. The drug is designed for people who are about 30 percent
over a healthy body weight or for those who are 20 percent
overweight with medical problems such as diabetes or high blood
pressure.
The drug is supposed to be used
in conjunction with a diet and exercise program. But according to
doctors who prescribe the drug, the combination is marginally
effective, with most patients losing about 10 percent to 15
percent of their original weight.
Virtually all drugs have side effects, and it should be noted that
doctors at the Mayo Clinic recently announced that they have
identified 24 women who, after taking "phentermine" for
an average of one year, had developed heart-valve problems.
Eight of those women also
developed a potentially fatal lung disease called pulmonary
hypertension. Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration has
reports of nine more women who also developed heart-valve
problems.
Unless you have a medically defined reason, most doctors say
phentermine should not be taken. Many medical officials say
you--and others like you who are trying to lose 10 to 15
pounds--shouldn't rely on these drugs to lose weight.
Instead, they say, you should
adhere to what health experts have been recommending for years:
Watch your diet and commit to a regular exercise program.
If, however, you decide to join
the millions of other dieters who are taking phentermine,
make sure you are being monitored by a reputable physician who'll
give you more than a five-minute examination before writing a
prescription.
